Mandriva Linux 2007: music contest - Rules

Summary

The contest, organised by Mandriva, aims to bring together the Linux community in creating the music that will be played when users log in and out of the desktop in the Mandriva 2007 range of products.

About Mandriva Linux

Basic rule

The contest is open to all (Mandriva employees excepted).

Only one account registration per person is allowed.

A registered person may submit as many entries as she likes.

Schedule
  • Wednesday 21 June 2006: contest begins
  • Sunday 20 August 2006, midnight: deadline for entries
  • Friday 1 September 2006: results announced.
Artistic regulations

Entries should consist of one login tune and one logout tune.

They should give the impression of, respectively, opening and closing the desktop.

They should not be intrusive.

We ask entrants to remember that this kind of tune will be heard many times by users, so they should take care to ensure the tunes will not become irritating when heard on a regular basis for a long time.

Technical regulations

The recordings should have a maximum length of 5 seconds each. It may of course be shorter than that, especially for the logout tune.

The volume level at the start and end of each recording must be zero.

The recordings should be sent in AIFF, FLAC ou WAV, mono or stereo, bit depth of 16, 24 or 32 bits, sampling frequency of 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz.

The recordings may be sent in a compressed file - zip or bzip2.

Legal considerations

The work must be original and free of any prior contractual engagement which would restrict its participation in this contest or its later usage in a Mandriva product.

The work must be published under one of the following licenses :

Both during and after the contest you may publish your entry on any other site, so long as you do not breach any of the above terms in doing so.

Breach of any of these conditions will result in the disqualification of the entrant.

The winning entrant hereby agrees, in accordance with the preceding conditions, to authorize Mandriva to use the work in any of its products (especially in the Mandriva Linux 2007 distribution) intended for private use, as well as in the promotion of these products to the public.

Entrants can register for the contest and upload their entries to a personal area at http://corp.mandriva.com/webteam/soundsubmit/.

Judges

The judges shall be the employees of Mandriva as of the day of the judging.

Judging and conclusion of contest

The winner will be decided by the judges on the basis of its conformance to the rules and their judgment of its quality.

At the close of the contest, all entries will be made public under the terms of the license chosen by their author, unless the author objects or has already published their entry.

All disputes or situations not foreseen by these regulatations will be resolved by the organising committee.

Exclusions

Employees of Mandriva and their families may not enter the contest.
